** PureStrat Skype Tournament - My Experiences -Part I**
      (article by Wolfman Shapiro about his participation in the Pure Strat June Draft Tournament,
       in this part he discusses the results of his first Skype Tournament.)

(Notes from the Wolfman: It is my hope that this article will be helpful for of our members who are seriously considering to join us for the on-line convention we are hosting on September 20th through the 22nd. I hope this article provides suggestions and ideas how to prepare for the tournaments we will offer utilizing the software program called Skype. This part of the report shares how our team did in the tournament by providing a summary of the 28 games played in regular tournament play versus six different opponents with the regular team statistics (hitting and pitching) for our boys who we called the Skokie Wolfmen.)

Hello dear members of the Ultimate Strat Baseball Newsletter.  I hope you enjoyed Part I of this article as I shared the background about the key aspects of how the Pure Strat Skype Tournaments works. It really is like playing your opponent live without having to leave your home!

Now, In this second part of the article, I wanted to include the results of my first time to participate in the Pure Strat Skype Tournament. I had a chance to play against some of the best players who have competed in various Star Touraments, including several individuals who have won a number of tournaments over the year including Willy Dominquez (the World's Champion, if you recall, we interviewed him a few months ago).

.

As I indicated in Part I, I had played two times before in a Star Tournament, when I visited Chicago, oh about six or seven years ago. When I played, I was concerned how well I would do as I don't play the game live much using the Super Advance rules (normally I play my games and in my league, the CBA via the computer game). But I want to compliment all of my opponents I played for their kindness and helpfulness as when questions came up for me on rules or how to read the charts, they politely helped me out. Ok lets dig in to the final results ..

All the games I played, I recorded on a scoresheet which is how I was able to keep the stats for my team, the Wolfmen and summarize each game in this report. To remind you about the team we drafted and the makeup of our team, here again is our roster (based on the 2012 card set):

Starting Pitchers:
Jarrod Parker (Oak) / Yu Darvish (Tex) / Alex Cobb (TB) / Ryan Vogelsong (SF) / Wade Miley (AZ)
**
(** - Miley was a spot starter used against teams with better LH hitting, who also could reveive)

Relief Pitchers:
Craig Kimbrell (ATL - closer); Jake McGee (TB -reverse lefty); Vinnie Pestano (CLEV - right ace);
Robbie Ross (TEX, reverse left); Joe Smith (CLEV, reverse right); Jose Valverde (DET, righty ace)

Catchers:
Salvador Perez (KC, RH); A. J. Pierzynski (CHA, LH)

Infielders:
Adrian Beltre (TEX, 3B); Billy Butler (KC, 1B, RH); Brandon Crawford (SF, SS, LH);
Brandon Phillips (CINN, 2B, RH); Jose Reyes (MIAMI, SS, S); Marcos Scuatro (SF, 2B, SS, 3B, R);
Joey Votto (CINN, 1B, LH)

Outfielders:
Carlos Gonzalez (CO, LF, LH); Jason Heyward (ATL, RF, LH); Adam Jones (BALT, CF, RH);
Cody Ross (BOS, OF, RH); Shane Victorino (LAD, LF, CF, S)

Stadium: Chicago AL - Ball Park Singles 7 / Ball Park Homers 19

Notes from the Wolfman:  So I was in a division with 7 teams and I played each of my six opponents a four game series, alternating between each game who was the home and away team. At the end of the tournament I was tied with best record in my division with another team, so we had to play a second four game series (called a Power Matchup) to determine for the playoffs (which I qualified for) whether I came in first or second place in the division. There were 14 managers in total for both divisions (7 each) and the top three teams qualified to move into the playoffs.

Below you will find a summary of each series, a little background on the Pure Strat Manager I was playing against and box scores of each game. After I share all the games played for the tournament is a summary of how my players performed. By far, Beltre was our hitting star and Cobb - Kimbrell - McGee were our pitching stars.

In the Wolfmen's first official game in the Pure Strat Skype tournament, the mighty Wolfmen were completely shutdown by Mr. Cannon pitching staff as Matt Cain (went five innings and allowed the only hit a single Jose Reyes) and Burton, Stults and Oliver kept the Wolfmen hittless. Justin Ruggiano was the hitting star going 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs for Mr. Cannon

Darvish for the Wolfmen with Relief help from R. Ross, J. Smith and Kimbell held Cannon's boy down to one run, a homer by Desmond. For Skokie six different players had RBIs as it was a team effort as Jose Reyes went 3 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Homeruns: Mauer (WC); Staunton (WC); Desmond (WC);
Pierzynski (SW); Beltre (SW)

No Pitching to speak off in this game, as Skokie came out on a House on Fire scoring 8 runs in the first two innings as everyone went crazy against Estrada including Beltre with 4 RBIs including a double and homer (5 RBIs) on the day and Pierzynski hitting a two run shot. Wayne came back slowly but surely with three homers of his own and Kimbrell had a hard time getting the save as he gave up a run in the 9th and had the bases loaded with two outs before he struck out Desmond to end the game. Hitter starts was Beltre, C. Gonzalez (4 for 5, 2 RBIs) and Phillips (3 for 5).

W: Robbie Ross / L: Chad Billingsley
Homeruns: Stanton - 2 (WC); Rizzo (WC); Butler (SW); Pierzynski (SW); Beltre (SW)

Skokie's ball park is a home run fested place and in this game, all the runs for Wayne came on two homers by Stanton and a three run shot by Rizzo. For Skokie their first run came in on a WP by Billingsley, then Butler hit a pinch hit homer, Pierzynski hit a 3 run shot in the fifth and Beltre won it with his 2 run shot in the 6th. Kimbrell came in to get the save in the 9th.

Well Skokie did well in its first round, was it a fluke and did the Wolfmen have a good team.  Peter took a 2-0 lead as they were hitting Parker hard until the 4th when 3 hits and a walk brought in 3 runs, in the 5th Butler hit a two run shot and Scutaro squeezed home a run in the 6th. Peter was able to pick two more runs in the 7th helped by a Wild pitch, Skokie was able to pick 2 more in the 9th also helped by a WP and McGee & Kimbrell shut Peter down to preserve an 8-4 win. Many players on Skokie had RBIs, Perez was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles.

Jones hit a homer for Peeter in the 1st and Ruiz hit a 2 run homer in the 3rd with Colvin capping Peter's scoring with a 3 run shot in the fifth. Other than a moment in the 3rd when C. Skokie scored 2 runs in the third on a 2 run shot by C. Gonzalez, and Cobb hit a SCFL with Reyes squeezing in a run in the 4th. A two run shot by Perez gave Skokie a 6-3 lead in the 7th.  The games hero's was Adam Jones who hit a homer against Boggs in the 10th to give Skokie a 7-6 win. This was a very close and tense game for both teams. A.Jones was the hitting star going 3 for 5 in the game.

In the final of the series Waterstreet showed his resilience again as after taking a 2-0 lead on a 2 run shot by C. Jones, Skokie went crazy in the bottom of the 1st against Lucas Harrell, scoring six runs on 3 hits, 3 walks and a WP. In the top of the third Trout led off with a homer and Colvin knocked in two more with a triple to make it 7-5 Skokie. Doumit singled in another run for Peter in the 5th with two outs and a double by Trout tied the game at 7 all in the 6th. In the bottom of the 7th Scutaro singles in Heyward in for a 8-7 Skokie lead and McGee and Krimbrell hold Waterstreet down for the final 3-1/3 innings.  So after two rounds Skokie has surprised the veterans in the tournament.

This was a pitcher's battle all the way as Skokie took a 1-0 lead on Perez's homer but Mike came back in the 4th and fifth with his trade mark of small ball rallies to take a 2-1 lead. Votto tied the game in the 6th knocking in Reyes and the relievers held each team down till the bottom of the night when Jay left off with a double, advanced to third by Carroll on a ground out and Escobar the SS, squeeze the winning run home.  Mike's superior starting pitching and ability to score on small ball killed Skokie in this series.

W: Kris Medlin / L: Joe Smith
Homeruns: Carpenter (MB); Cabrera (MB); Beltre (SW)

Kris Medlin, who some feel has the best starter's card for 2012 was masterful pitching a complete game - Skokie got runners on base but couldn't score them - in the meantime Mike's crew would get men on base each inning, using stolen bases and sacrifices - the big hitting star was David Wright who went 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs and contributions for many different players on Mike's team. As you can see in this series Skokie struggled to score runs whereas Mike was able to score just what was needed.

This game was the same story as the prior games, all Breithaupt and his crusaders as Skokie was once again helpless at the plate and Mike was able to get serval rallies going.  Melky Cabrera was the hitting star going our 4 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Lohse with Patton and Kontos held Skokie to 1 run.  Skokie now had lost three straight and needed a victory in the next game.

This was an amazing game that went on and on. When Mike scored a run in the first off Vogelsong which was run walked in, it seems like the Breithaupt express was on its way again. But somehow Skokie limited Mike to only four more hits over the next 13 innings (but 7 walks) and Wade Miley had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out in the top of the 14th before getting out the side. Skokie's first run came on a Double by Beltre, a sacrifice by Vogelsong and a Sacrifice Fly by Victorino. Then in the bottom of the 14th, C. Gonzalez walked, Votto was intentially walked, Pierzynski walked to load the bases and Heyward was HBP to bring in the winning run in this marathon. No hitting stars to mention, it was all pitchers this game.

Skokie was hoping to get back on winning ways but we had trouble scoring on Dickey and Mott - Dave scored early with a homer by Utley in the 2nd and Headley two run double in the third and an error Pierzynski. We came back in the 6th to make it 4-3 but had a runner throw out at the plate and Ellis' homer in the 9th made it 5-3. The hitting star was Ellis, 2 for 4, two runs, 1 RBI with his homer. Skokie needed to find out how to get back on the winning ways!

Finally the Skokie bats awoke, after 5 games of struggling to score runs. Heyward was the hitting star, 2 for 4 with two home runs and 4 RBIs. Beltre also went 3 for 4. Darvish pitched a complete game shutout for the win. In this tournament if you go ahead by 10 runs or more, the game ends so the game finished in the 7th.

Cobb was able to keep Dave's hitters at bay allowing one run in the 2nd, Skokie threw out McCutchen trying to score in the 4th and Kimbrell stopped another rally in the 8th to get the save and preserve the win for Cobb.  Skokie used two walks in the 4th and two more in the 5th to score runs and Perez's two run double in the 8th gave Skokie a 5-1 win. Skokie only had 5 hits but 3 men scored who walked. Skokie was back on a winning streak.

Once again the Skokie pitching came up to the task as Miley held Bengert to only one run in the 5th, a home run by Viciedo and Pestano and McGee closed the door. The hitting star was Pierzysnki who homered in the 6th to tie the game, Reyes and Heyward had RBIs in the 8th for a 3-1 Skokie lead and Pierzysnki double in the 9th scored another run for a 4-1 Skokie win. At this point Skokie was now in 1st or 2nd of our division. Next up was our chance to play the Star Tournaments World Champion (won their big tournament in January of this year, see our April interview) with Willy Dominguez and produced a surprising result.

This game started out like most games for Skokie where our opponents scored first. Walker hit a homer in the 2nd and then singles by Ortiz and Cepedes scored two more for a 3-0 lead. Through the 7th Skokie only had 3 hits and two innings wiped out by double plays as Jake Peavy was masterful. But then Skokie came to life in the 8th and after one out, a double by Jones, a walk to Philips and Scutaro pinch hitting, had the bases loaded. Reyes singled in one run to make it 3-1 but the key blow was Victorino pinch hitting for Gonzalez, hits a Grand Slam to put Skokie up (he was the hitting star of the game) 5-3 and Phillips two run shot in the 9th made it 7-3. Kimbrell and McGee closed it out for the Skokie win.

This game was a pitcher's game but this was the first of three games of frustration for Willie as his team was unable to score any runs for the remainder of this series unbelievably. Darvish pitched great to shut Willie down and received help from Ross, Pestano and McGee to preserve the shutout. Skokie's only runs came in the 5th when Reyes hit a two run homer. Skokie had base loaded in the first with one out but Perez flied out into a DP and again had a chance to score Heyward from 1st on Phillip's double in the 2nd but he was thrown out at theplate. Reyes was the hitting star going 3 for 4 as well as C. Gonzales went 3 for 4. A nail bitter of a game.

Willie was very excited to get out of Skokie and finish this series as again he was totally unable to score any runs, finishing with 3 runs total for the four games. Vogelsong with help from Smith, McGee and Kimbrell preserved this shutout while Beltre one run homer in the 6th and Gonzalez's two run shot in the 7th gave Skokie all the runs it needed to sweep the series and win 3-0.  We would have to say the result of this series was totally unexpected but Willie said he didn't like the team he drafted.  Ok, one more series for the normal regulation play before the power series to decide which teams make the playofffs.

This game was all Mr. Hegg as he scored early and then knocked out Miley in the 5th. Skokie was unable to score at all on Dempster and when he was pulled in the 8th finally with Beltre's homer came up with 3 runs in the 8th to avoid a shutout. The hitting stars for Dave were Weiters 2 or 3 with 2 RBIs, Fielder 2 for 2 with an RBI. So Skokie in its first tournament finished 16-8 tied for first with Mike Breithaupt. The final series was to determine our place within the top three teams of our division, either winning it with a first round bye or have to play the 3rd place finisher of the other division in the first round of the playoffs.

(Mike Breithaupt was our opponent and as you recall, he was the only other manager in this
tournament that we were unable to win or tie our series. I reviewed our previous serious to see
if there was some different strategies we could beat Mike to win outright our division. Since
we were tied in records, if we split the four game series we would need to play a 5th game.
Since Mike used small ball to win, including stealing a lot of bases we used Perez as our
catcher for all four games. We thought we had a chance here as we came back in Game 1. )

W: Jake McGee / L: Casey Janssen
Homerun: Beltre -2 (SW); Victorino (SW); Prado (MB)

As happened in the prior series Mike got his first two hitters on base via a walk against Parker and Carpenter singled in the first run. But homers by Beltre in the 2nd and Victorino in the 5th gave Skokie a 2-1 lead. However in the 7th against Smith, Prado hit a 3 run homer to give Breithaupt a 4-2 lead.  In the top of the 8th Reyes singled and went to third on a steal and Scutaro squeezed him home for a 4-3 score. Then Beltre hits his second homer of the game to tie it at 4 each. In the bottom of the 8th against McGee, Mike had first and third with one out but couldn't score. A triple by Reyes in the top of the 9th scores A. Jones and Kimbrell gets the save as Skokie won this close game 5-4.

W: Kris Medlin / L: Yu Darvish
Homeruns: Swisher (MB); A. Jones (SW)

Skokie was hopeful to take game #2, after Swisher hit a homer in the top of the first or Mike, a Past Ball and basehit by Heyward put Skokie up 2-1 in the bottom of the 1st.  Then the top of the 5th was a big inning or Mike as his pitcher had two base hits and between 4 walks and hits, Mike scored six which Skokie couldn't recover.  Once again Skokie was having trouble scoring runs on Breithaupt. A. Jones 2 run shot in the sixth made it 7-4 but then we couldn't do anything vs. Medlin.  No specific hitting star for Mike but pretty much each of his hitters got on base via a walk or hit. So as we went into Game 3 of this Power Match, we remained tied.
SKOKIE WOLFMEN'S RECORD: 17 -9

W: Kyle Lohse / L: Alex Cobb
Homeruns: Wright (MB)

Skokie was hopeful with Cobb throwing two shutouts in our prior two series he could hold the Breithaupt express but this was not meant to be. Wright hits a 3 run homer in the first and Mike continued scoring runs at will between, walks, hits and stolen bases. We were pretty much helpless this game to do anything to stop him. Lohse pitched greater supported by Patton, Jenssen, Kontos and Norberto to shut Skokie down as again Skokie struggled to get runs.  The hitting star for Mike was Jon Jay who was 5 for 5 with a run scored, 3 rbis, and two stolen bases.  If Skokie wanted a shot at keeping 1st place in the division now, they had to win Game #4, but so far we were 2-5 vs. Mike.
SKOKIE WOLFMEN'S RECORD: 17 -10

W: Chris Sales / L: Ryan Vogelsong
Homeruns: A. Jones (SW); Reyes (SW); Heyward (SW)

This was another amazing game between Breithaupt and Skokie - as it followed the old pattern of Mike scoring first and Skokie had to play catch up - Mike use 4 singles, a wild pitch and a sacrifice to score three in the third. Skokie playing in their hitter's park with a strong lineup against lefties vs. Mike's starter Chris Sales held Skokie to only one run a homer by A. Jones. However there was a key play in the 4th when Perez doubled with Scuatro on 1st who tried to score and was shut down.  We have to keep our starters in till the 5th so Mike quickly took out Sales and brought in K. Jenssen who shut Skokie out for 2 innings.  Again another key play in the 6th, with two outs and Men on 1st and third, Melky Cabrera hits a pinch hit double and two runs score as Mike takes a commanding 5-1 lead.  However, finally in the bottom of the 8th against Patton, Skokie comes through with 3 runs, on a single homer by reyes and a two run shot by Heyward to make it 5-4 but Pappelbon closes Skokie out 1-2-3 in the 9th as Mike claims the division championship with a record of 19-9 and Skokie comes in second at 17-11.  So close.  If Scutaro had scored in the 4th or we had gotten Cabrera out in the 6th we might have gone to a Game 5. No hitter star for Mike as the victory was a team effort.
SKOKIE WOLFMEN'S RECORD: 17 -11

-------------------------------

Notes from the Wolfman:  So unfortunately, we were unable to do any better against Mike B., the second time around although the first and last games of this series could have gone either way.  So with Mike winning the division, he received a 1st round bye in the playoffs. As stated for this tournament there were two - 7 team divisions. I was in Division B.  So for the next round, I would play the 3rd ranked team from Division A in a 7 game series.  The winner of this series would advance to the second round of the playoffs to play the Division A champion in a 7 game series.  Our opponent for this first round of the playoffs was Mick van Valkenburg (who at the time of this writing is the leader in points for the collective tournaments offered by Star Tournaments in 2013).  A chance to face another Pure Strat / Star Tournament champion.  We will report on the Skokie's Wolfmen escapades in the Pure Strat Skype Playoffs in the next issue (which we hope is in the second issue of August).

Final Notes from the Wolfman:

Well as you can see this was a full months of games against some very good SOM Baseball managers.  I think we picked a pretty balanced team - we did outscore our opponents 125 - 105 and had more homers 34-24.  We only committed 8 errors and McGee was lights out in relief. I would say Cobb was our best starter with 2 shutouts. Beltre was the best hitter with 9 homers and 23 RBIs.

I hope that this article so far (via the two parts) has provided for our readers an excellent feel and idea what it is like to play in a tournament using Skype, the actual cards and an on-line dice roller as is offered by Pure Strat (the western division of the Star Tournaments). Two of the three tournaments we will be offering for the On-line SOM Baseball Convention in September will utilize this process to play the games. Additionally, you may need a little preparation to draft a team you will compete with at the convention, (again two of the 3 tournaments use this process to build your team) so hopefully part I o this article helped in this regard. Now I would recommend that you might wish to return to our June issue and find Part I of this article that discusses this tournament and the rules, so you will have a complete picture and remember what I shared before. You can find this earlier article by going to this page:
